Phoenix and the Turtle is known for taking its listeners on a musical journey. The fusion of instrumental rock and classical strings, while incorporating sparse vocals, lends to the uniqueness of this southern California quartet’s sound. Phoenix and the Turtle formed in 2003 as a collaboration for a friend’s funeral.
The band blends a mixture of styles, instruments, and structures to create their sound. Taking cues from bands such as The Album Leaf, and Godspeed You! Black Emperor, the band has intensely powerful instrumentation. Furthermore, mixing in carefully placed male and female vocals (Blonde Redhead, Sonic Youth) gives the band a unique edge over other instrumental bands.
